ACCESS FROM BARAJAS AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN MADRID

From Terminals 1, 2 and 3: Line 8 towards “Nuevos Ministerios” (the metro station at the airport is called "Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3"). Approx. 17m.
From Terminal 4: Line 8 towards "Nuevos Ministerios" (the metro station at the airport is called "Aeropuerto T4"). Approx. 20m.

The metro fare to downtown Madrid from any airport Terminal is 2 € while one way ticket in urban area is 1€. No airport surcharge for holder of a tourist travel pass, that you can purchase in the airport metro stations. Metro Maps are available in all stations, anyway you can download here

 

  By Bus

Number 200 to “Avenida de America” bus station. There you can find connection to metro lines 4, 6, 7 and 9.

 

  By Taxi

The approximate cost from the airport to downtown Madrid is 30 €.

From Airport: Any terminal you land, take line 8 (pink) direction Nuevos Ministerios, there change line 6 (light grey) to Mendez Alvaro then walk straight to the Conference's Venue. Pay attention to the exit (salida) you take. In the metro platform, look for


and you will be 700m far from the Conference Venue as shown in this map (click to enlarge).


Line 6 is circular, pay attention to the direction you are taking! Other nearby stations are: Atocha Renfe (line 1, light blue), Menendez Pelayo (line 1, light blue) and Delicias (line 3, yellow). Atocha Renfe is also train station, if you come out from this station pay attention where exactly you are. All stations have maps with the exit location.
From train stations from Atocha Renfe, you can walk; from Chamartin take line 1 toward Atocha Renfe (line 1, light blue) or Menendez Pelayo (line 1, light blue).

ATTENTION !
Due to renovation of metro lines, Line 1 (light blue) will remain closed till mid of September.

  Metro

 

The lines are differentiated by colour and are numbered from 1 to 13. Tickets can be purchased in every station from ticket offices or automated machines. Single tickets cost 1 €. Metrobus, which is a 10 journey travel card valid for metro and buses, costs 6.70 €. The metro runs from 6:00 am to 1:30 am. During weekends, night buses operate along metro lines (buhometro).

  Bus

 

The city buses are a good alternative to the metro. Single tickets can be paid directly to the bus driver and the price is 1 €. The buses run from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. During weekends, night buses operate along metro lines (buhometro). From Cibeles Square, all week days long, night buses are operative (buho). Night buses (called “buhos”) run less frequently.

If you use the bus, be aware that traffic jams in Madrid are frequent.

 

  Tourist Travel Pass

A Tourist Travel Pass can be used for any kind of public transportation in the city as many times as required within its period of validity. There are passes for 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days. The card can be purchased at any metro station, at the Centro de Atención al Viajero (Passenger Assistance Centre) and at Tourist Offices.

  Taxi

 

Taxis in Madrid are white and are distinguished with a diagonal red band on the front doors. A green light on top of the taxi indicates if it is available. The taxi should always charge by the taxi-meter that runs according to distance covered, the urban area, the day of the week (higher fares on holidays), and the pickup point (higher fares for pickups in bus stations, train stations and airport). Passengers are never required to pay additional fares for luggage if there is enough space in the boot. Additional fares are shown on information leaflets on the back windows of the taxi.

 

Car Rental

Car rental is not recommended to get around Madrid due the traffic. Parking in Madrid is expensive and always difficult. A large part of the tourist area is not accessible by car.
